That alone wouldn't have been enough to hold my interest, it was the rest, the odd bits that popped up now and then, that made me enjoy this romp through the wild west (after taking a turn through The Twilight Zone first). Loved most of the characters but especially Julie Newmar as Miss Kitty and Meg Foster as Stell Barr. The only two clinkers in the cast were Musetta Vander as Lash and George Takei as Doc Valentine (trading on his time with Star Trek). They crossed too far over the line and went from being caricatures to just plain grotesque. The problem with this type of humor is that it works, because everyone is in on the joke, or it doesn't, because it misses being funny by a smile. " me up. " Or the Bingo sequence during a funeral, funny once, but they just wouldn't let it go. That's the only fault I could find with this piece; knowing and not knowing when to let a joke settle in on its own. I liked it, I'm keeping it, and I'm looking forward to watching it again sometime. The philosophy was weak when it should have been strong and the backstory that could have made a real impact was thin and wishy-washy and somehow underplayed. There was also something inescapably anodyne about the depiction of the alien and the whole spread of its activities, when it could have - should have - been deeply dreadful. Also the unveiling of the 'Scavs' was too predictable and too lightly done. Time and money could have been better spent showing the destruction of the Earth, the horror of it, and making a real connection with the characters later on. For all these faults however, it is still a very good film - just unfortunately not a great one. Soooo, the 4K stream is definitely sharper than the standard HD. That was a good start. Firing up the disc, the titles as the film started were even more glorious than the streamed version. And that was where the clear improvement ended.. Apparently Oblivion is stored on a 2K intermediate then upscaled to 4K for the 4K release. read into that what you will. needless to say, I won't be buying a lot of remastered 2K to 4K movies - I'll stick to streaming for those ones- the convenience alone outweighs the benefit of shiny intros! that being said, at least if my internet connection goes down - which does happen from time to time - I'll still have a great movie on disc to watch. I`m surprised there is no apparent "Art of" book available, though it originated as a graphic novel – an obscure and difficult to obtain edition of this exists, good luck in finding it. Although many of the plot devices have appeared in other films and books, the combination and engrossing visuals should appeal to all but the most jaded of sci-fi viewers or Cruise-haters. A pretty good 2 hours worth; the DVD release has subtitles, but you may have to adjust your TV to read them properly; the film is presented in standard anamorphic widescreen and there are no extras whatsoever.
