Although there is not much to the concept, I found tension and remorse in such simple human interactions and this is what made this movie work. The soundtrack is also lovely. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film, and I can see why. By the end of this movie, I came to admire everyone's positions on both sides. Great, great film, a must see. The dvd arrived in time and in great position. I rather like the cover art on the case, and the movie has special features with interviews with the cast and crews. The dvd is only viewable in Europe - region 2, and there is English subtitles included. The language of the movie in German and Dutch of course. Great movie. The sergeant found he could not simply see youngsters in German uniforms being killed by German mines and try as he might he could not prevent himself from seeing that under the uniform they too were human.

All the supporting actors were great and Dillion definitely played a very believable role as his son. This movie should have definitely gotten more praise back in the day. This is an action/suspense movie with spy elements as well. The balance between action and suspense scenes is just right and the interaction between the father (Gene Hackman) and son (Matt Dillon) is very entertaining along the way - the son finds out the father isn't such an old fuddy-duddy after all! The movie does start out pretty slowly, but the beginning does a good job of introducing the main characters and sets up the tense yet humorous relationship between father and son.
