(Cimarron was made in 1930, but released in February of 1931). Yancey Cravat (Richard Dix) is a newspaper editor, lawyer, and the town preacher when he moves his family from Kansas to the Oklahoma territory. But Yancy has what the picture calls "wanderlust"-he's never stayed in the same place for more than five years. The movie covers some forty years of time, from about 1870 to 1929, and at over two hours, it's way too long. The picture quality is pretty good, although there are sections that have lots of lines. The sound is about what you would expect from a 1930 movie, although having watched many films from the early thirties, I just don't see the tremendous problems Hollywood was supposed to have had going from silent to sound (nothing like what you see in "Singin' In The Rain" (1952). But getting back to our hero Yancy, he has a wife named Sabra (Irene Dunne) and two children and spends much of his time cleaning up the town and driving out the outlaws. He's especially proud of himself when he shoots and kills (in self-defense) the man who killed the last newspaper editor (by shooting him in the back).

Cultural Disrespect Issues: The late 19t Century into the 20th Century were interesting times in American history. Mexicans, Native Americans and African Americans were still being disrespected as an accepted custom. These actions and words spoken to or about the many characters of those cultures were difficult to watch and hear even in the year 2020. Oddly enough, Sol got no opposition from anyone. When he asked Yancey if it was ok for him to stay at the service Yancey was affiliating, he told him he could. Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2017 Verified Purchase I had preconceptions about this film because most of what I had heard said it was poorly acted and dated. I didn't find this to be the case at all. This multigenerational account of the formation of the Oklahoma Territories had me in its grip from the stirring land rush that opens the film to its wistful Depression Era conclusion. The film is at turns epic, grandiose, and ambitious. In these supposedly enlightened times some may fault the film but I found its attitudes towards African-Americans, Native-Americans, and Jews to be quite progressive when you consider the time it was made. This would make a terrific pairing with George Stevens' "Giant", another great film adapted from an Edna Ferber novel.
